Most of the people when they get to Cusco feels slight headache, nausea, dizzy, a little heavier, those symptoms are normal when you are to 3300m which is the altitude of Cusco after few days in Cusco and drinking coca tea, water and resting a little bit the symptoms no longer feel
But very rare times some people feel strong headache, high fever, throwing up, bleeding from the nose. these is a serious problem you have to rest all the time but the best way to avoid the altitude sickness is to get to lower elevations or you may go to see the doctor. But this happens very weird times.
If you have any medication for altitude sickness such as Diamox you have to start taking a couple days in advance before to start the trek in order to avoid the altitude sickness during the hike. Because if you start to take the medications when you get altitude sickness, the medications sometimes does not work, if they work just for little while that is why that you have to start taking in advance. It does not mean that you have to take the medication this is just to ensure your welfare especially if you come from see level and once in Cusco you start feeling some altitude sickness is better to cure the altitude sickness before to start the trek.
Once on the hike you get altitude sickness which is happens very few times. What do we do? If you do not have a serious problem, you have to rest drink a lot of water and chewing the coca leafs.
